Laser Hair Reduction
Long-term reduction, and one less thing in your routine.
The word is reduction, not removal, and the difference is the whole conversation.
What is it?
Laser hair reduction uses light energy absorbed by the pigment in the hair to affect the follicle it grows from.
Because hair grows in cycles and only some follicles are treatable at any one time, treatment is planned as a series spaced across those cycles.
Suitability and approach depend on hair colour, skin type, and the area being treated.
What can it help improve?
- Reducing hair on the legs, underarms, bikini area, back, chest, or face
- Ongoing irritation from shaving or waxing
- Ingrown hairs in frequently shaved areas
- The time cost of a daily or weekly routine
Related goals: Unwanted hair
Who tends to consider it?
- People tired of a maintenance routine that never ends.
- People with recurrent irritation or ingrown hairs.
- Men treating the back, chest, or neckline.
- People who want a realistic expectation of how many sessions their area typically needs before committing.
What it does — and what it doesn't do
What it does
- Reduces hair density over a planned series
- Can significantly reduce the time spent on routine hair removal
- Works with the hair growth cycle, which is why spacing matters
- Is planned per area, since areas differ substantially
What it doesn’t do
- Guarantee permanent removal of every hair — reduction is the accurate term
- Work equally well on all hair colours; very light, grey, or white hair responds poorly because there is little pigment to target
- Remove the need for occasional maintenance sessions in many cases
- Suit anyone actively tanning or with recent significant sun exposure
What the appointment may involve
Assessment covers skin type, hair colour, the area concerned, and any relevant history including recent sun exposure and hair removal method.
You will be advised how to prepare the area before your appointment, and what to avoid beforehand.
Eye protection is used and cooling is typically applied; most people describe the sensation as a snap with each pulse.
Sessions are scheduled with intervals appropriate to the area's growth cycle.
General educational description only. Anything specific to you — suitability, preparation, and aftercare — is discussed at consultation.
What results typically mean
The improvement people generally want is fewer, finer hairs and far less routine — not a guarantee that nothing ever grows.
Shedding of treated hair occurs over the days after a session; this is expected rather than regrowth.
Response varies with hair colour, area, hormones, and individual biology.
Timing and treatment series
A series is required because only follicles in the active growth phase respond to any single session.
Session counts vary meaningfully by area, and your provider will give an area-specific expectation.
Occasional maintenance sessions are common afterwards.
Recovery and downtime
Redness and mild swelling around the follicles after a session are typical and usually short-lived.
Sun protection of treated areas is required, and sun exposure before or after treatment affects safety and results.
Your provider gives specific aftercare for the area treated.
How this may fit with other treatments
If you are also considering pigment treatment on the same area, sequencing is planned so the skin is not over-treated.
For men treating the back or chest, this often forms part of a broader men's aesthetics conversation.
Body treatments on the same area are usually scheduled with appropriate spacing rather than combined.
Questions to ask your provider
- Given my hair colour and skin type, what result is realistic?
- How many sessions does this specific area typically take?
- What maintenance should I expect afterwards?
- How should I prepare, and what should I avoid before each session?
- What is this treatment unlikely to change for me?
- What does maintaining this look like, realistically, once we start?
- What would make you recommend against treating me today?
